My Dear Sir,

There is at present vacant a Professorship of Mathematics at Agra — under the Indian Government. The Salary is £600 a year with £150 for outfit and passage money. Would such a situation suit your views or are you still bent on ecclesiastical preferment?[2] Please to return me an answer immediately but say nothing to anyone abt. it.

Yrs &c.

Frederick Fuller

[2] The gently ironic reference to “ecclesiastical preferment” undoubtedly reflects a general sentiment amongst those who recognised Smith’s intellectual abilities. Cf. B&C p.44f.
